Medical Cannabis: Studies Show Improved Quality of Life

Intro

A ground-breaking study involving over 2,300 patients has revealed the transformative potential of medical marijuana. Over a three-month period, patients with chronic health conditions experienced significant improvements in their overall quality of life, reduced fatigue, and relief from conditions such as anxiety, depression, and chronic pain when using medical cannabis.

Studying Medical Cannabis:

This remarkable research, published in the journal PLoS ONE, delves into the experiences of Australian patients eligible for the QUEST Initiative. This initiative is a “large prospective multicenter study of patients with any chronic health condition newly prescribed medicinal cannabis between November 2020 and December 2021.” The participants ranged in age from 18 to 97, with 62.8 percent being female.

The most prevalent conditions among participants included chronic pain (69 percent), insomnia (23 percent), anxiety (22 percent), and anxiety/depression (11 percent). Half of the patients reported having more than one of these conditions.

Transformation Through Medical Cannabis:

The study took a comprehensive approach to measuring the impact of medical cannabis on the participants’ lives. Before commencing their cannabis therapy, patients completed baseline surveys covering health-related quality of life (HRQL), pain, sleep, fatigue, anxiety, and depression. These surveys were followed by assessments every two weeks for three months.

The participants were prescribed Little Green Pharma medical cannabis oil, containing THC and CBD in various ratios, all dissolved in a medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil. Four formulations were available to cater to different patient needs.

Positive Outcomes of Medical Cannabis:

The results were nothing short of astonishing. Participants who completed three months of treatment reported significant improvements in their overall health-related quality of life compared to their baseline assessments. Those who continued their treatment experienced greater improvements than those who only completed the first follow-up.

Patients also reported reduced pain, with the most significant improvements observed among those with a chronic pain diagnosis. Additionally, anxiety, depression, and pain showed significant reductions, particularly among those with corresponding health conditions.

Sleep Patterns and Medical Cannabis:

While sleep patterns didn’t show notable improvements, fatigue decreased significantly, indicating substantial progress in this aspect of patients’ lives.

Regarding depression, though scores shifted from moderate to mild severity, the difference didn’t reach the 5-point threshold for “clinically meaningful improvement.” However, specific conditions, such as mixed depressive and anxiety disorders, showed significant progress.

Anxiety scores followed a similar trend, shifting from moderate/severe to mild anxiety, with marked improvement among patients diagnosed with anxiety conditions.

Challenges Along the Way:

Despite the overwhelmingly positive findings, the study authors acknowledged the possibility of a placebo effect influencing some of the reported improvements. The lack of a control group and the widespread public discussion surrounding the benefits of medicinal cannabis could have heightened patient expectations.

What Lies Ahead for Medical Cannabis:

The study isn’t stopping here. It plans to follow patients over 12 months to assess the long-term maintenance of these improvements. Subgroup analysis will also explore whether patients with specific conditions achieve better outcomes using condition-specific questionnaires.

Australia’s Changing Landscape:

In Australia, medical cannabis is tightly regulated but accessible to patients with health conditions that don’t respond to conventional treatments. Recent changes have even allowed the limited use of psilocybin and MDMA for treating PTSD and treatment-resistant depression.

The journey to understanding the full potential of medical marijuana continues, offering hope to countless individuals seeking relief from chronic health conditions. As research like this study unfolds, it becomes increasingly evident that medical marijuana is not just a treatment but a transformative force in the lives of those who need it most.
